The discrepancy was discovered the following morning, August 31, when personnel opened the Kote and Battalion Magazine and found broken locks and storage boxes. A retired army officer, who had left service only two months earlier, was detained by Malkajgiri Police in connection with the theft. Police officials said the officer named two to three additional persons during questioning, and those leads are being verified.
Investigation and Detentions
The probe is a multi-agency effort involving the Army, Military Intelligence, Telangana Police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA). A senior Malkajgiri police official confirmed that a joint team searched the retired officer’s residence in Mahabubnagar and subsequently recovered stolen weapons and ammunition from a location in Hyderabad. Police are examining whether an insider from the armoury facilitated the officer’s access, and they are verifying that all recovered hardware matches the missing inventory.
Stolen Items and Estimated Loss
According to police officials, the missing cache comprised four AK-203 assault rifles, one INSAS 1B1 rifle, six 9 mm Auto 1A pistols, a civilian 6.35-bore pistol, a passive night-vision binocular, 21 magazines and approximately 1,912 rounds of ammunition. The value of the stolen items was estimated at about INR15 lakh.
Ongoing Inquiry and Motive Exploration
Investigators are probing the ultimate motive behind the theft, including the intended destination of the weapons. Police have also scrutinized the role of personnel responsible for the Bell of Arms and the ammunition section to determine whether any cooperation enabled the breach.
