Demi McDaid, 23, and her partner Jack Farrelly, 30, were detained in a Sydney hotel at the end of June following a police search that uncovered 105 kg of ketamine in a car parked on the premises. Earlier investigations had located an additional 2 kg of ketamine, scales, gloves and other paraphernalia at a short-term stay unit in Artarmon on Sydney’s Lower North Shore. Police also seized mobile phones, AUD 2,000 in cash (approximately £1,060), and documents described as drug ledgers.

A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office confirmed that the government is supporting the two British nationals and is in contact with Australian authorities. Acting Inspector Alison Dixon of the North Shore Police Area Command warned that drug syndicates are exploiting the high turnover of temporary accommodation rentals, such as hotels and Airbnbs, to evade detection and urged property owners to remain vigilant.
