September 2026 Tornado Outbreak in Southwestern Ontario

Confirmed Tornadoes and Downbursts

Researchers with the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) have verified a total of six tornadoes and three downbursts that struck southwestern Ontario during the early-September 2026 storm system. The events include one EF0 tornado, five EF1 tornadoes, one EF0 downburst and two EF1 downbursts. Wind speeds ranged from roughly 125 km/h to 165 km/h, with the most intense downburst recorded at an estimated 165 km/h. Path lengths varied: the Monkton tornado traveled about 4.9 km, the Tavistock-Stratford tornado tracked more than six kilometres, and a second tornado near Tavistock covered over eight kilometres. Downburst damage extended across an area up to 8.5 km long and three kilometres wide.

Damage Assessment and Survey Findings

Field and drone surveys conducted on September 8, 2026 documented damage to farm buildings, grain bins, power poles and trees. In the Monkton area, a partially destroyed barn and several grain bins were reported. The Seaforth downburst damaged multiple farm structures and power infrastructure. Across the region, agricultural crops suffered extensive loss, and numerous residential roofs lost shingles. NTP officials noted that the surveys captured damage to two farm buildings in the Monkton vicinity and that no further ground surveys are planned.

Official Response and Future Monitoring

The NTP released a comprehensive report summarizing the confirmed events and emphasized that the tornado and downburst patterns observed are typical for summer storm lines in Ontario. Project director Dave Sills explained that tornadoes can develop along the leading edge of such storm lines, a mechanism consistent with the observed tracks. No injuries were reported in any of the confirmed tornadoes or downbursts.

The outbreak adds to a growing seasonal pattern of severe convective storms in the province, highlighting the need for continued public awareness and infrastructure resilience. While power outages affected thousands temporarily, the rapid restoration of electricity and the absence of casualties suggest effective emergency response.
