Pakistan Deploys Chinese HQ-17AE Short-Range Air Defence System

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) released a video confirming that it is now operating the HQ-17AE short-range air-defence (SHORAD) system, an export variant of China’s HQ-17A. The footage, posted on a social-media platform, showcases the wheeled launcher and highlights the PAF’s “multidomain operational skills” as it prepares for potential low-altitude threats.

System Features and Export Record

The HQ-17AE can engage targets within a range of up to 20 km (12 miles) and at altitudes of up to 10 km. It is designed to counter unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopters, cruise missiles, guided munitions and aircraft. The system is a Chinese adaptation of the Russian Tor-M1 missile platform. Prior to Pakistan’s acquisition, the HQ-17 series had been exported to Saudi Arabia, Serbia and Tajikistan, making Pakistan the fourth foreign operator of the system.

Strategic Context with India

Analysts note that the deployment arrives amid lingering tensions following the May border clash between India and Pakistan. By fielding a platform capable of targeting Indian drones and other low-altitude assets, Pakistan aims to strengthen its defensive posture in any future confrontation. The PAF’s public demonstration underscores a broader effort to showcase readiness across multiple domains.

The addition of the HQ-17AE could alter the tactical calculus for both sides in the disputed frontier.
