A team of psychologists from City University of New York, led by Sydney Hope and Joshua Plotnik, used the well-known detour paradigm to assess impulse control in Asian elephants (Elephas maximus). Working with the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation in Thailand, the researchers presented 16 elephants, ranging from 4 to 60 years old, with a transparent perspex box that concealed food. The animals had to inhibit the urge to reach directly through the barrier and instead navigate around to the opening.
Study Design and Findings
The detour task measured latency to enter the box and the pattern of exploration once the trunk was inside. Elephants generally avoided the transparent barrier, indicating they were not deceived by its visibility. When the box was rotated so the opening faced a different side, the elephants took longer to locate the entry point, producing a “characteristic error pattern” that the authors cite as evidence of prepotent response inhibition. Older individuals showed the greatest difficulty adapting to the reoriented box, suggesting a possible decline in cognitive flexibility with age.
Interpretation by Researchers
Hope and Plotnik conclude that the observed inhibitory control aligns with the broader positive correlation between brain size and impulse-regulation ability documented across taxa. They note that strong inhibitory control often accompanies complex social structures, a trait well documented in elephant societies. The authors caution that the study is an initial step and does not fully resolve questions about overall elephant intelligence.
Implications for Understanding Animal Cognition
The findings add to a growing body of research showing that large-brained mammals can master tasks originally designed for human children. Demonstrating that Asian elephants can suppress a direct response in favor of a more strategic approach supports the view that sophisticated cognitive processes are not exclusive to primates. This insight may inform future welfare and enrichment programs for captive elephants, emphasizing the importance of providing challenges that engage their inhibitory capacities.
