The 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami killed about 230,000 people, displaced 1.7 million and triggered over US$14 billion in international aid coordinated by the UN and the World Bank. That massive multilateral response created financing mechanisms later used when Nepal’s 2024 floods led Prime Minister Balendra Shah to propose a $4.78 billion reconstruction bill at the UN General Assembly.
