Outbreak Linked to Inflatable Play Structures

A community-acquired outbreak of methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA) was traced to an outdoor gathering in eastern Ireland in the fall of 2025. Researchers identified three inflatable bouncy castles as the common exposure among the 48 children and teenagers who fell ill, most of whom spent extended periods on the structures.

Investigation Findings

The investigation, published in *Eurosurveillance*, reported that all 47 attendees who were examined had used the inflatables, and 19 of them played for at least four hours. Health officials noted that the event’s warm, humid, and intermittently rainy conditions, combined with “rough-and-tumble” activity, likely facilitated bacterial spread through skin abrasions. The MRSA strain carried the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) toxin, a rare variant in Ireland, and was described as the largest community-acquired MRSA cluster recorded in the country.

Clinical Impact

Affected youths, aged 5 to 16 with a median age of 12, presented rapidly: 34 developed symptoms within two days, and some within 24 hours. Reported manifestations included spots, pustules, redness, blisters, and abscesses, most frequently on the thighs and legs. Thirty-three children were managed by general practitioners, while 15 visited emergency departments or day wards; four required hospital admission with a median stay of four days. No intensive-care treatment or deaths were recorded.

Public Health Implications

The outbreak underscores the infection-control challenges posed by prolonged close contact on shared play equipment, especially under wet conditions that increase skin vulnerability. MRSA’s drug-resistant nature and the presence of the PVL toxin raise concerns about potential spread beyond the initial cluster.

Ongoing Monitoring

Health authorities are continuing surveillance for additional cases and advising organizers of public events to enforce hygiene measures, limit prolonged contact on inflatables, and ensure prompt medical evaluation of skin infections.
