Lukashenko Orders Nationwide Military Readiness Checks Up to Mobilization

On September 11, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced an extension of combat-readiness inspections across the armed forces. Speaking at the Obuz-Lesnovsky combined-arms training ground near Baranavichy, he said the army “needs to be shaken up” and that the checks would cover an artillery brigade and communications units after earlier inspections of tank and motor-rifle formations. Lukashenko added that the drills are intended to mirror actual combat conditions and that his youngest son, Nikolai Lukashenko, is serving as a lieutenant following a draft.

Belarus remains Russia’s closest regional ally. Since February 2022, Russian troops, aircraft and weapons have operated from Belarusian territory to support the invasion of Ukraine, although Belarus has not formally deployed its own forces to the front. The country shares borders with NATO members Poland, Lithuania and Latvia and regularly conducts joint exercises with Russia, heightening security concerns on the alliance’s eastern flank. Ukrainian military intelligence chief Oleh Ivashchenko has said units of Russia’s 101st Missile Brigade, equipped with the Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile system, are stationed in Belarus, a deployment previously highlighted by President Volodymyr Zelensky as a major escalation risk.
