Fire Breaks Out in Poplar Tower Block
In the early hours of Saturday, a blaze erupted in a two-room flat and its balcony on the 17th floor of a 22-storey residential tower on Blackwall Way in Poplar, east London. The fire damaged roughly half of the flat before the London Fire Brigade (LFB) brought it under control just after 6:40 a.m.
Response and Rescue Operations
The LFB dispatched ten fire engines and approximately 70 firefighters from stations across east London, including Poplar, Whitechapel, Plaistow, Stratford, Shadwell, East Ham, East Greenwich, Bethnal Green and Greenwich. Crews arrived shortly after the 4:35 a.m. emergency call and worked for nearly two hours to extinguish the flames. The brigade reported that two adults and a child were rescued from the apartment while wearing breathing apparatus.
Casualties and Evacuations
A man was pronounced dead at the scene. In addition to the fatalities, a woman and a child left the flat before firefighters arrived, and about 50 other residents evacuated the building and were taken to a rest centre while the incident was being managed.
Investigation and Ongoing Efforts
The LFB confirmed that a range of factors are being examined to determine the fire’s cause. No definitive origin has been identified, and the investigation remains active.
