Overview of the Season’s Main Events
Autumn 2025 offers a series of observable astronomical phenomena for the northern-hemisphere sky-watcher. The Pleiades star cluster in Taurus becomes prominent as evenings darken, while the Orionid meteor shower reaches its peak on 22 October 2025. Mid-November brings a rare pre-dawn alignment of Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter on 14 November. The Leonid meteor shower is expected to peak around 17 November, and a full “Beaver Moon” will become a supermoon on 24 November.
Meteor Showers and Their Characteristics
The Orionids originate from debris left by Halley’s comet and are active from early October through November, with the highest activity on 22 October. The Leonids, named for the constellation Leo, can enter Earth’s atmosphere at roughly 70 km per second, making them among the fastest visible meteors. Under optimal dark-sky conditions, observers may see about 10 to 15 Leonids per hour at the shower’s peak, though actual counts depend on weather, light pollution and lunar brightness.
Planetary Viewing Opportunities
Around 14 November, the inner planets Mercury and Venus appear low on the eastern horizon before sunrise, accompanied by Mars and Jupiter higher in the sky. Mercury’s proximity to the sunrise glare makes it the most challenging to spot, while Venus and Jupiter are among the brightest objects visible to the naked eye.
The November Supermoon
The full moon on 24 November will be a supermoon, meaning it is near perigee and therefore appears slightly larger and brighter than an average full moon. This event marks the first of four consecutive supermoons that will continue through February 2027.
Practical Tips for Observers
Successful viewing requires dark locations away from artificial lighting and a period for eye adaptation. Binoculars or telescopes are unnecessary for meteors, but they can enhance the view of faint stars in the Pleiades. Checking local weather forecasts via a reliable weather service is advisable to maximize clear-sky opportunities.
