History

Historical Context

The Maratha community’s push for OBC status began in the early 1980s, intensified after the 2016 Kopardi murder and led to a 16 % reservation law in 2018 that the Supreme Court struck down in 2021. Building on that legacy, activist Manoj Jarange-Patil began a hunger strike on 29 August 2025 in Mumbai, echoing earlier protests and urging the state to issue Kunbi certificates for Maratha OBC eligibility.
