History

Historical Context

In 1804 Sir James Mackintosh founded the Literary Society of Bombay, later the Asiatic Society of Mumbai, to collect Indian manuscripts. The society’s library now holds about 47,000 manuscripts and has digitised many works through its Granth Sanjeevani platform. Home Minister Amit Shah’s 2024 exhibition opening links this legacy to contemporary efforts to broaden public access to historic texts.
