History

Historical Context

The BRIC idea emerged from Russian diplomat Yevgeny Primakov in 1998 and was named by Jim O’Neill in 2001. Leaders met in Yekaterinburg on 16 June 2009, launching a $100 billion New Development Bank and a multipolar agenda. After South Africa’s 2011 entry and Indonesia’s 2025 accession, India’s 2026 New Delhi summit under Prime Minister Modi added an Integrated Early Warning System and logistics framework.
