Earlier this week, the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron was tasked with a maritime search-and-rescue mission after a crew member aboard a cruise ship fell ill. The vessel was located off the northern tip of Vancouver Island, northwest of Port Hardy, British Columbia. A CH-149 Cormorant helicopter and a CC-295 Kingfisher airplane were dispatched to the scene.

Execution of the Medevac

The CC-295 Kingfisher arrived first and began coordinating the medevac with the ship’s captain, providing “over-watch” for the incoming helicopter. The captain steered the ship into the wind, turned off the ship’s radar, and cleared a space on the bow to allow safe helicopter approach. Two search-and-rescue technicians were lowered from the CH-149 onto the deck, where they assumed care of the patient and prepared the individual for extraction. The patient, a travel companion, and a member of the ship’s medical staff were then hoisted into the helicopter, which flew the group to Comox. Upon arrival, the patient was transferred to an awaiting air ambulance for further medical treatment. The specific nature of the injury and the patient’s condition were not disclosed.

The Canadian Armed Forces issued a news release stating that the operation proceeded smoothly, highlighting the coordination between the aircraft, the ship’s crew, and the rescue technicians. The release emphasized that the rapid response ensured the patient received timely emergency care on the mainland.
