Labour Day Weekend Spearing Fines
The Canadian Football League’s Department of Health, Safety and Integrity fined two linebackers for spearing during the league’s Labour Day weekend games. Saskatchewan Roughriders linebacker Aubrey Miller Jr. was penalized for a hit on Winnipeg Blue Bombers receiver Tim White in the 61st Labour Day Classic. Edmonton Elks linebacker Nick Anderson received a fine for a spearing blow on Calgary Stampeders quarterback Vernon Adams Jr.. The league’s policy does not disclose the monetary amounts of the fines.
Disciplinary Framework
Discipline is administered by the Department of Health, Safety and Integrity, which includes Greg Dick, Chief Football Operations Officer; Darren Hackwood, Vice-President of Officiating; Eric Noivo, Vice-President of Football Operations and Player Safety; and Ryan Janzen, Associate Vice-President of Football Operations. The Office of the Commissioner oversees offences that could lead to suspension. Under the collective bargaining agreement, the maximum fine a player can receive is half the value of a game cheque, and the league does not announce fine amounts, dress-code penalties, or discipline involving released players.
Game Context and Player Performance
In the Roughriders-Bombers overtime win (32-26), Miller, filling in for the injured Josh Woods, recorded two defensive tackles, a special-teams tackle, a sack and a pass breakup, while White caught seven passes for 63 yards. In the Elks-Stampeders contest (38-28), Anderson posted a game-high 12 tackles, one sack and two pass breakups; Adams, returning from a concussion, completed 15 of 29 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns and added 33 rushing yards despite the spearing hit.
Upcoming Rematches
Both the Roughriders and the Elks have scheduled rematches against their Week 14 opponents on Saturday, September 12. These games will provide an opportunity for the fined players to return to the field under the league’s disciplinary guidelines.
