Historical Context

The Indo-Bangladeshi Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Peace was signed on 19 March 1972 by Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, establishing a 25-year pact and a Joint River Commission. After Mujib’s 1975 assassination and later water-sharing disputes, Bangladesh’s 2026 election of Tarique Rahman prompted India to welcome a diplomatic reset, echoing the original aim of balanced cooperation.
