Unusual Damage to a Victoria Plum Tree

A garden in southern England experienced a sudden surge of plum fruit moth (Grapholita funebrana) larvae in its Victoria plum tree. The tree, heavily laden with fruit, suffered branch breakage and produced plums that appeared flawless from a distance but were internally compromised. When the gardener cut open an affected fruit, a vivid pink caterpillar was found surrounded by brown frass pellets. The larvae burrow into the flesh around the stone, leaving a clear, sticky sap exudate (gummosis) at the entry hole. As the caterpillars mature, their bodies turn pink, and they eventually emerge from the fruit, as observed when a mass of larvae migrated onto a compost-bin lid.

Heat and Drought Exacerbate the Problem

The summer was marked by intense heat and a lack of rain, conditions that led to poor cropping, premature ripening, and pre-harvest drop across the garden’s fruit trees. While apples and quince produced few or no fruit, the Victoria plum remained productive, creating a concentrated food source for the moth. Environmental stress is believed to have weakened the fruit’s defenses, making it more susceptible to egg laying and larval entry.

Signs of Infestation and Immediate Effects

Affected plums were slightly misshapen and often emitted a globule of clear sap from a barely visible entry hole. The gardener reported tasting a bitter, gritty texture—later identified as frass—when biting into the fruit. Fallen and damaged plums were left for wildlife such as blackbirds, peacock butterflies, and wasps, but the presence of larvae increased the risk of further spread.

Recommended Management Practices

To break the moth’s life cycle, the gardener was advised to remove all dropped and damaged plums and dispose of them far from the tree. Salvaging usable fruit for jam while discarding infested material in the compost helped limit pupation. Prompt removal of fallen fruit reduces the chance that larvae will pupate in the soil and emerge as adults later in the season.
