Data Access Strategy and Partnerships
British pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has entered the GBA data ecosystem through a memorandum of understanding signed in September of the previous year with the University of Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area International Clinical Trial Institute. Under the agreement, GSK will financially sponsor an HKU-led study of the long-term health effects of the shingles vaccine and will invest in shared data infrastructure. The partnership gives GSK indirect access to patient information collected by hospitals and government agencies, while direct data retrieval remains restricted to the public-sector partners.
Expected Benefits for Drug Development and Regulation
Nicholas Teo, GSK’s Hong Kong and Macau general manager, emphasizes that the patient data can serve as “supplementary evidence” for regulatory filings and potential label expansions. Beyond confirming the established efficacy of vaccines against flu, shingles and respiratory syncytial virus, GSK researchers are exploring ancillary benefits such as cardiovascular and neurological outcomes. The company also cites its existing expertise in vaccination, hepatitis B prevention, and a growing oncology and haematology portfolio as areas that could leverage the expanded evidence base.
