The Incident at Glenfield Beach
On Monday morning a local surfer, Mel Ismail, was attacked while surfing alone at Glenfield Beach in Geraldton. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development reported the bite occurred at about 9:45 a.m., and a section of Ismail’s board was torn off. A second surfer who arrived on the scene saw Ismail about 40 metres offshore, surrounded by blood, and paddled to him on his own board. Teenagers on the beach helped administer first aid and applied a makeshift tourniquet to his leg. St John Ambulance confirmed Ismail was transported to Geraldton Hospital as a priority-one emergency, arriving around 10:30 a.m. He sustained leg injuries and was described as “serious but stable,” with some observers noting the possibility of partial amputation.
Rescue and Immediate Response
Emergency responders, including a Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) spokesperson, confirmed that Ismail was off-duty when the attack occurred. The DFES wellness team and regional staff were mobilised to support the injured staff member, his family and colleagues. The City of Greater Geraldton closed the southern portion of Glenfield Beach near the intersection of Glenfield Beach Drive and Surfside Terrace, advising all recreational water users to avoid the area while authorities assess whether the shark remains nearby.

Mayor Jerry Clune expressed shock at the incident and urged residents to follow warnings issued by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and local police. Opposition fisheries spokeswoman Kirrilee Warr said the attack raises questions about state management of sharks in Western Australia and conveyed sympathy for the victim and first responders.
