Overview of the POWER Rebate Program
The state’s Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate (POWER) initiative will deliver one-time checks to roughly 8.2 million New York households. Funded with $1 billion approved in the 2026-27 budget, the program is intended to offset rising utility costs that have been driven by higher fuel prices, supply-chain disruptions and aging infrastructure. Payments are mailed automatically; no separate application is required.
Eligibility Criteria and Payment Levels
To qualify, residents must have filed a timely 2024 New York State resident income-tax return, been full-time residents in 2024, and not be claimed as a dependent on another return. The amount of the rebate depends on filing status and income as reported on that return:
- Joint filers with income <= $150,000 receive $200.
- Joint filers with income between $150,000 and $300,000 receive $150.
- Single filers, heads of household and other qualifying taxpayers with income <= $150,000 receive $100.
State officials estimate that the distribution will reach the targeted households without any action required from recipients.
Distribution Timeline
The checks will begin mailing in late September and continue through December. Recipients will receive their payments by mail; the state has indicated that the rollout will be staggered to ensure delivery before the winter heating season.
