Volkswagen's Mission Efficiency Prototype Sets New Efficiency Benchmark

Record-Breaking Efficiency Demonstrated on Long-Distance Run

Volkswagen unveiled the Mission Efficiency prototype and immediately put it to the test, driving it 794 miles (1,278 km) from Wolfsburg to Vienna. The vehicle was charged only once and arrived with 104 miles (168 km) of range remaining, equating to a consumption of 7.51 kWh per 100 miles—about 279 MPGe. Volkswagen notes that, on paper, the prototype could extract more than 400 miles of range from its 54.9 kWh battery, far surpassing the 420 miles achieved by the Lucid Air Pure from an 84 kWh pack.

Aerodynamic and Lightweight Design Choices

The teardrop-shaped body employs a Kammback silhouette, achieving a drag coefficient of 0.158 while keeping frontal area low at 2.08 m². Wheels and tires are positioned tightly between the arches and front tires to reduce aerodynamic drag, a choice that may compromise ride comfort. Side-view mirrors are retained instead of cameras to preserve depth perception, and solar cells on the roof and trunk lid add an estimated 18 miles (30 km) of range under ideal sunny conditions at a constant 42.25 mph (68 kph). The vehicle reuses the electric motor and battery from the ID. Polo, bringing it close to production-ready status.

Interior and Practicality Trade-offs

Designed as a 2+2, the rear seats accommodate passengers under 5 ft 3 in (1.6 m), limiting adult use. The cabin foregoes a traditional infotainment system in favor of a portable Bluetooth speaker, echoing the minimalist approach of Slate Auto’s pickup. Lightweight materials are used throughout the interior to further reduce weight.

Production Outlook and Pricing Context

Volkswagen describes the Mission Efficiency as “near production” but has not confirmed mass-production plans. The automaker’s earlier halo model, the XL1, saw a limited run of 250 units in 2013 with a starting price of €110,000, suggesting that any future production could target a niche, premium market.
