Three male African wild dogs, dubbed the “Mayukuyuku males,” left their birth pack in Kafue National Park in mid-2025 and travelled more than 4,100 km over a nine-month period. Their route took them eastward, then north toward Kitwe and Ndola, before turning back east to the Luangwa River Valley and ultimately reaching a game-management area between South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi national parks by April 2026. The journey is regarded as the longest recorded dispersal by an African mammal.

Ecological Background and Conservation Context

African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) are among the continent’s rarest predators, with an estimated 6,000 individuals remaining in the wild. They live in highly social packs and must leave their natal pack at two to three years of age to find unrelated mates. Dispersal—one-way travel in search of new territory—is distinct from seasonal migration. The study tracked 19 wild-dog groups using GPS collars, all moving within or around seven Zambian protected areas, and four groups approaching the borders of Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

Bruce Ellender, co-author and Kafue Conservation director for The Nature Conservancy, emphasized that wide-ranging species such as wild dogs and elephants require landscape-level connectivity rather than isolated protected islands. Matt Becker, chief executive of the Zambian Carnivore Programme, highlighted the journey’s illustration of the species’ need for extensive space and urged continued improvement of wildlife corridors. Nyambe Nyambe, executive director of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area secretariat, called for conservation strategies that benefit both people and wildlife, suggesting nature-based tourism and sustainable game ranching as viable approaches.

The record-breaking movement underscores the importance of maintaining and expanding natural corridors that link protected areas across southern and eastern Africa. Researchers warn that snares and expanding human land use pose significant mortality risks, and they advocate for policies that integrate community livelihoods with large-scale habitat connectivity to ensure the long-term survival of this endangered predator.
