On Monday afternoon an unidentified person forced entry onto the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base in the Darwin suburb of Winnellie. Defence officials confirmed the individual “unlawfully gained access,” assaulted a Defence Force member and then fled the site in a stolen white Ford Ranger. Northern Territory Police responded to the report at approximately 4:30 p.m., pursued the vehicle south on the Stuart Highway, and abandoned the chase after losing sight of the car near Palmerston. The offender has not been identified and investigations by the NT Police, the Joint Military Police Unit, Australian Federal Police and RAAF security remain ongoing.

The breach occurs while RAAF Base Darwin is undergoing a major $160 million upgrade aimed at enhancing security, community safety and resilience. Completion of the upgrades is expected by mid-2027.
