Swedish company Flow Neuroscience has begun prescribing its at-home wearable headset for depression in the United States. The device, worn on the forehead for about 30 minutes daily, delivers low-intensity electrical stimulation to the left frontal lobe—a brain region linked to mood regulation. Flow received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December of the previous year, making it one of the first brain-stimulating wearables available by prescription.
Mechanism and Position Within Existing Therapies
The headset targets the same cortical area as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), an established clinical treatment that uses magnetic fields to activate neurons. Unlike TMS, which requires patients to attend clinic sessions five days a week for several weeks, Flow’s system is designed for self-administration at home and is managed through a companion app. The approach aligns with a broader wave of neurotechnology wearables, including devices for communication assistance, meditation enhancement, and sleep improvement.
Cost and Accessibility
Flow’s price falls in the four-figure range, a level that may limit rapid adoption given that roughly one in six American adults currently use antidepressant medication. By comparison, a full course of TMS can cost up to $15,000 without insurance coverage. The high upfront cost of the headset could pose a barrier for many patients, especially those without robust insurance benefits for emerging digital therapies.

FDA clearance classifies the headset as a medical device rather than a drug, allowing physicians to prescribe it without the extensive insurance reimbursement frameworks that apply to pharmaceuticals.
