PGA Tour Announces Two-Tier Competition Model for 2028

Players will be divided into a top-level Championship Series and a secondary Challenger Series, which will run concurrently throughout the year. Eligibility and Membership Criteria
Championship Series membership for 2028 will be granted to:

- Winners of Championship events—including The Players Championship and the four majors—who receive a two-year exemption.
- The No. 1 player from PGA Tour University and players ranked Nos. 2-5 in the same ranking.
- Up to three players using a one-time career-money exemption (available to those in the top 50 of career earnings at the end of 2027).
- Limited medical extensions.
Challenger Series eligibility includes:
- Players relegated from the Championship Series.
- Those finishing Nos. 21-90 on the prior Challenger points list.
- Winners of Challenger events (exempt for the current and next season).
- The top 20 from the Korn Ferry Tour points list.
- The No. 2-5 PGA Tour University graduates.
- The five top finishers from Q-School.
Fields will contain up to 144 golfers for Challenger events and an average of 120 for Championship events.
Points System and Prize Structure
The Tour introduced a flatter points curve for the Championship Series. Winners of each Championship event, The Players Championship, and the four majors will receive 300 points; runners-up 200 points, third place 150 points, and the 65th-place finisher 30 points. Points are awarded only to members of the Championship Series; non-members who make the cut earn no points until promoted.
Purse sizes will differ markedly: each Championship event will carry a minimum $20 million purse, while Challenger events will offer $4 million purses. The “last chance” series will award its top three finishers Championship cards, provided they compete in all four events (medical exceptions apply).

Impact on Players – The Tiger Woods Example
Under the revised criteria, veteran Tiger Woods (age 50) can only access the Championship Series via the one-time career-money exemption, as his standard exemptions for The Players Championship and the U.S. Open expired after the 2024 season. The Tour confirmed that Woods did not lobby for special treatment.
