Sharp Decline in NYC Entry-Level Tech Positions
A new report from the Center for an Urban Future shows that postings for entry-level jobs in the computer and mathematical sector fell by 49 % between 2022 and 2025, the steepest drop among all occupational groups in the city. The same period saw a 36 % decline in entry-level office and administrative-support roles, as well as comparable cuts in business and financial-operations postings. Arts, design, entertainment, sports and media fields also experienced a 34 % reduction in entry-level listings.
Study Findings and Sector Trends
While tech-related postings contracted sharply, the study identified modest growth in a few areas. Healthcare practitioner and technical positions rose by 21 % since 2022, and the legal sector posted an 8 % increase in entry-level openings. Community and social services, protective services, and life, physical and social-science fields each recorded a 7 % rise. City Comptroller Mark Levine highlighted that the surge in computer-science graduates now outpaces available entry-level tech jobs, estimating roughly 1.6 new graduates for every opening.
Official Response and Policy Proposals
He urged Mayor Zohran Mamdani to raise the city’s rainy-day fund to 16 % of annual tax revenue, reform the pension system, and strengthen public infrastructure against AI-related threats. In the most optimistic scenario outlined in the report, AI could generate about 52,000 new private-sector jobs per year through 2030.

If the projected job losses materialize, the city could face a significant contraction in its labor market and a sizable hit to municipal finances. The disparity between the growing pool of new computer-science graduates and the shrinking pool of entry-level positions underscores a structural mismatch that may force young professionals to seek opportunities outside the city or in unrelated fields.
