Ottawa police announced that nine residents—seven adults and two youths—were arrested in connection with a series of vehicle thefts targeting newer SUVs in the city’s east end. The arrests resulted from two major investigations that unfolded over several months, during which officers identified the use of GPS tracking devices to locate and steal the vehicles.
Scope of the Investigation
Police disclosed that the investigations involve at least 15 stolen vehicles, including a motorcycle recovered after a search warrant was executed. The suspects were alleged to have placed tracking devices on newer Toyota, Honda and Lexus SUVs before stealing them from private residences. Open police data show that 1,400 vehicle theft reports were logged in 2025, with 913 vehicles recovered, a notable decline from the more than 2,000 reports recorded in 2022 and 2023.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
The nine individuals face a total of 170 combined charges, encompassing theft of motor vehicles, possession and trafficking of stolen property, and criminal harassment. The breadth of the charges reflects the coordinated nature of the theft scheme and the use of technology to facilitate the crimes.
