South Korean conglomerates Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have partnered with universities to create “contract departments” that embed company-designed curricula within degree programs. SK Hynix collaborates with Sogang University’s Department of System Semiconductor Engineering, while Samsung works with Sungkyunkwan University’s Department of Intelligent Software. Both pathways promise graduates entry-level positions at the sponsoring firm, creating a direct pipeline of AI-ready talent.
Rising Student Demand and Competition
Application volume to these corporate-linked programs has surged. Data from Seoul-based Jongro Academy show a 38% year-over-year increase in applicants to contract departments overall. Specifically, applications to Samsung-affiliated departments rose 6.5% for the 2026 academic year, and those to SK Hynix-linked departments rose 12.7%. Competition is intense: for every Samsung-sponsored seat, 13.44 candidates apply, while SK Hynix seats attract 9.14 applicants. Students report that admission cut-offs and grade requirements have risen sharply compared with the prior year.
Financial Support, Scholarship Terms, and Employment Obligations
SK Hynix provides a monthly study-incentive allowance of roughly 300,000 won and covers tuition for scholars, including master’s and PhD tracks. Recipients must maintain a GPA of at least 2.3 to keep the scholarship and 2.7 to secure guaranteed employment. Those who leave the program must repay the support, and graduates are required to work for SK Hynix for a period equal to the length of financial assistance received.
Samsung’s SKKU program covers tuition for the first three years, contingent on meeting minimum grades. Beginning in the latter half of the third year, students must pass a separate Samsung hiring process; only those who succeed continue receiving full tuition support for the remaining two years.
Company Perspectives on Curriculum and Future Plans
SK Hynix said it participates in curriculum design and review, and while formal internships are not yet offered, the company is considering adding them. Samsung Electronics told CNBC it supplies universities with input on relevant courses and curricula and provides “various experiential opportunities,” such as internships, overseas research visits, and conference attendance for its scholars.
