He also examined two proposed visual mechanisms: a generic “sagging” illusion of long horizontal lines and the Hering illusion produced by intersecting lines. The former lacks empirical support, and the latter requires acute angles that the Parthenon’s near-vertical columns do not provide, making it ineffective in three dimensions.
