Historical Context

In July 1987, after UN Resolution 598, the United States began Operation Earnest Will, re-flagging Kuwaiti tankers and escorting 79 vessels through the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran-Iraq War. Seventh Fleet carrier groups, including USS Nimitz, protected the convoys until September 1988. Today the Gulf Cooperation Council and U.S. forces have revived daylight escorts, echoing that 1987 convoy model as Iranian-backed militias threaten infrastructure.
