Conservation Success and Tagging Technology
Experts attribute the uptick to a combination of long-term federal protections and improved monitoring. Federal safeguards for great whites and their primary prey, gray seals, were enacted in the 1990s. Matthew Davis, a shark specialist with Maine’s Department of Natural Resources, notes that male great whites reach maturity after roughly 26 years and females after up to 33 years, a timeline that aligns with the period since protections began. Walter Golet, an associate professor at the University of Maine School of Marine Science, concurs that current numbers exceed those of previous decades and that research links the population rise to these protections.
Maine’s shark monitoring program, less than a decade old, employs acoustic telemetry tags that emit unique electronic signatures detected by underwater stations. While not every shark is tagged, the system provides valuable movement data and helps explain the recent surge.
Climate Factors and Their Limits
The region’s waters rank among the world’s fastest-warming, and recent marine heatwaves—exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon—have contributed to broader East-Coast shark activity. However, experts caution that climate alone does not fully explain the concentration of great whites off Maine, emphasizing the role of conservation measures and increased detection technology.
