Sony Unveils PlayStation Pulse and Pulse Edge Wireless Headsets

Core Announcement and Availability
Sony announced two new wireless headsets for PlayStation 5 owners: the PlayStation Pulse and the higher-spec Pulse Edge. Both models will launch later this holiday season, with the Pulse Edge slated for release in early 2027. Neither headset is on sale yet, and pricing details have not been disclosed.
Technical Features and Design Differences
The headsets employ planar magnetic drivers, a technology that uses thin diaphragms positioned between magnets to reduce distortion and produce cleaner bass. Sony notes that the Pulse Edge incorporates double the magnets per driver—eight versus six on the standard Pulse—resulting in deeper low-frequency response. Both units support PlayStation Link, delivering ultra-low-latency audio and seamless switching among compatible devices such as the PS5, PlayStation Portal, PC, and Mac, while also offering standard Bluetooth connectivity.
Audio capture is handled by integrated microphones with AI-enhanced noise rejection; the Pulse Edge adds a detachable boom mic for clearer voice chat. Active noise cancellation and a built-in carry case are exclusive to the Pulse Edge, and the headset includes on-device audio controls integrated into the PS5 controller.
Pricing Context and Market Positioning
Sony has not released official pricing, but the company’s prior planar-magnetic offering, the Pulse Elite, currently sells for $149 on Amazon. For comparison, the PlayStation version of the newer Audeze Maxwell 2—unveiled at CES 2026—retails for $329. The additional magnets, active noise cancellation, and detachable mic suggest the Pulse Edge will be positioned at a higher price point than the standard Pulse.
Anticipated Impact on Gaming Audio
Sony emphasizes that the new headsets are designed to improve spatial awareness in first-person shooters by making directional cues more precise. Combined with low-latency PlayStation Link connectivity, the devices aim to deliver a more immersive audio experience across the PlayStation ecosystem and compatible non-Sony platforms.
