Rescue Operation Overview
In early April, an F-15E Strike Eagle, call sign “Dude 44,” was downed over Iran by a shoulder-fired missile. Both crew members ejected and landed miles apart within Iranian territory. The pilot, “Dude 44 Alpha,” was recovered after roughly six hours. The weapons systems officer, “Dude 44 Bravo,” suffered a broken back, arm and shoulder when his parachute failed, leaving him stranded for nearly two days before rescuers reached him.
Timeline of the Mission
- April 5 – Two Air Force pararescue specialists (PJs) arrived at Bravo’s position on a 7,000-foot ridgeline, an event captured in newly released footage.
- Following the rescue, the landing gear of the two rescue aircraft became stuck in desert sand, temporarily trapping more than 90 U.S. service members on the ground.
- A clandestine Air Force unit later extracted the personnel, and Bravo reached safety about 50 hours after the aircraft was shot down, as the sun rose on Easter Sunday.

U.S. Central Command Commander Adm. Brad Cooper reported that 92 service members were on the ground in Iran, marking the first U.S. boots-on-the-ground presence there since 1980. Air support included bombers, drones, and two large search-and-rescue aircraft that landed on a makeshift desert runway, while “Little Bird” helicopters ferried the pararescue team to the ridgeline. Overall, between 3,000 and 5,000 service members supported the operation.
