Police responded to a disturbance involving juveniles in the University Place neighborhood of northeast Lincoln on Tuesday night. While officers were speaking with individuals at the scene, a gunshot was heard about a block away near North 46th Street and Madison Avenue. Officers arrived within minutes and found a 19-year-old woman with a single gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving measures, she died later at a hospital. Sequence of Events
The initial call came at approximately 7:20 p.m., reporting a confrontation near North 47th Street and Cleveland Avenue, close to Huntington Elementary School. According to Lincoln Police Department (LPD) statements, the victim was among those present when the disturbance began and fled as officers arrived. Witnesses later described an argument between the suspect’s wife and a group of youths near the intersection of North 46th Street and Madison Avenue. LPD Capt. Ben Miller said the suspect, Tyler Benzel, left his home, approached the arguing group, issued verbal threats, and then fired a single shot that struck the victim.
Investigation and Suspect
Tyler Benzel, 37, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony. He is being held in the Lancaster County jail. Police recovered a 9 mm handgun at the scene, though they have not confirmed it as the murder weapon. An autopsy on the victim is pending. LPD investigators continue to interview witnesses and process the crime scene, and they have taken one person into custody while speaking with several additional witnesses.
