History

Historical Context

The Syrian state's Arab-nationalist policies, from the 1962 census that rendered 120,000 Kurds stateless to the 2004 Qamishli riots that left at least 30 dead, have long suppressed Kurdish rights. In 2004 President Bashar al-Assad’s amendment, negotiated with the PYD, authorized 5,000 Kurdish-language classrooms. Today protests in Qamishli and Hasakah revive those grievances, demanding full SDF integration and reversal of fuel-price hikes.
