Historical Context

In October 1947 Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession, which Lord Mountbatten accepted on 27 October, bringing defence and foreign affairs of Jammu & Kashmir under India. Tribal incursions triggered the first Indo-Pakistani war (1947-48), during which the United Nations recorded about 1.3 million displaced civilians and 5,000 combat deaths. The accession’s legal precedent still frames Kashmir negotiations today.
