The 2009 summit highlighted the bloc’s heft—about 15 % of global GDP and 40 % of gold reserves—and launched annual meetings that later added South Africa; the 2026 New Delhi summit, led by Modi with Putin, deepens defence, energy and critical-minerals cooperation.
