Validation Milestone for Italy’s New Anti-Ship Missile

MBDA announced that a validation firing of its TESEO Mk2/E missile system successfully demonstrated the missile’s range and overall design. The test involved an approximately 20-minute piloted cruise flight, confirming the performance parameters required for the next phase of the programme. MBDA described the trial as a key step toward concluding the development stage and moving into full-rate production.

Program Background and Development Timeline

The TESEO Mk2/E programme was launched in 2021 under a contract with Italy’s National Directorate of Naval Armaments to develop, integrate, and qualify a new anti-ship solution. A 2024 firing previously validated the design of new missile components and aerodynamics. In 2025, a production contract was signed, establishing the schedule that targets the first delivery of missiles in 2028.

Technical Features and Capabilities

The new missile incorporates a active electronically scanned array (Active Electronically Scanned Antenna (AESA)) radio-frequency seeker, a satellite data link for in-flight control, and shortened reaction times. These upgrades enable engagement of both sea and land targets at longer ranges than earlier TESEO (OTOMAT) variants, providing greater safety for crews and greater flexibility for mission planning.

Integration Plans and Expected Delivery

MBDA indicated that the TESEO Mk2/E will be fitted on the Italian Navy’s upcoming surface combatants, including the PPA multipurpose combat ships, the DDX next-generation destroyers, the FREMM-class frigates, Horizon-class destroyers, and future FREMM EVO frigates. Production units are slated for delivery beginning in 2028, aligning with the Navy’s modernization schedule.

Strategic Significance

Renzo Tosini, Executive Vice President Sales & Business Development and Managing Director of MBDA Italia, said the successful test guarantees a sovereign capability for Italy and positions the system for potential export. The missile’s enhanced range, seeker technology, and satellite-linked control are intended to strengthen Italy’s naval defence posture and expand MBDA’s anti-ship portfolio.
