Shin Bet Director Vows Global Pursuit of Hamas Operatives

At a semi-annual ceremony honoring Shin Bet agents, Director David Zini declared that the agency will track down every Hamas participant in the October 7, 2023 attack that killed roughly 1,200 Israelis, regardless of where they are hiding.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog attended the event, where 18 agents received honors, including three women. Netanyahu noted that Shin Bet had thwarted about 1,000 terror attacks in the West Bank and had captured the majority of the October 7 attackers in Gaza. Among the awardees were a female desk analyst in the Counter-Espionage Division—identified only as “A”—who balances a demanding family life with complex intelligence work, and a male handler and recruiter, also named “A,” credited with expanding the agency’s source network.

Zini’s past remarks have sparked questions about potential favoritism toward Netanyahu. Although no concrete evidence has emerged, Zini previously declined a Knesset advisory committee’s recommendation to provide a secret-service security detail for Gadi Eiskot, the Yashar party leader and prime-ministerial candidate, arguing that such protection was unnecessary without a specific threat. Critics have pointed to these statements as indicative of possible political bias.

The global pursuit pledge follows an earlier diplomatic promise to the United States administration not to conduct operations on Qatari soil after a failed strike on Hamas officials.
