By Drooid · · How we work

Core Event

Early Thursday morning, Codiac Regional RCMP officers responded to reports of gunfire on St. George Street in downtown Moncton. Officers located a male youth in a parking lot at the corner of Lutz and Victoria Streets who was armed with a firearm and “shot towards police.” The youth fired toward the officers, who returned fire with lethal and non-lethal weapons. After a brief foot pursuit, the youth was apprehended, taken to hospital for assessment, and no officers or members of the public were injured. The scene, near Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral, was cordoned off with police tape while investigators secured the area.

Official Statements & Responses

Cpl. Spokesperson Khalehla Perrault Russell added that none of the shots fired by officers struck the youth. Stephanie Patterson, spokesperson for Anglophone East School District, confirmed that Edith Cavell School entered a 30-minute lockdown but no other schools were affected.

On-the-Ground Reports

Resident Jessy Wallace described waking to the sound of gunfire and watching officers drag the suspect into a vehicle from a parking lot behind the cathedral. Roger Cormier, who recorded video of the suspect fleeing, said he was “still in shock” and noted the proximity of the incident to homes and businesses. Joyce Strong, an apartment resident, initially thought the noises were fireworks before seeing a man in a white hoodie run from police.

Investigation Details

The Serious Incident Response Team, an independent civilian-directed agency, is examining the shooting to determine whether any police actions resulted in serious injury or other misconduct. SiRT’s preliminary information confirms the youth fired in the direction of officers and that officers employed both lethal and non-lethal force. The investigation remains ongoing, with the area remaining cordoned off into the afternoon.
