The Incident
In the early hours of September 17, a white Chevrolet Beat driven at high speed from the Delhi side struck a crew of four workers installing an iron grille on the divider near Shri Ram Chowk on the Dwarka Expressway in Gurugram. Police said the car lost control and ploughed into the labourers, killing two and critically injuring two others, while the driver—identified as a 20-year-old Delhi University student, Vedant Khanna (also reported as Vedan Khanna)—sustained serious injuries.
Construction Context
The workers were employed by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) to install metal fences and iron grilles along the expressway divider. According to police, the work was being carried out amid “negligible traffic” when the vehicle arrived. Eyewitnesses noted the absence of reflective warning signs or proper barricading at the site, raising concerns about safety measures on the high-speed corridor.
Victims and Injuries
The deceased were identified as Bijender Kumar and Pappu Singh, both residents of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, aged roughly 58-60. The injured workers were named as Satish Chand and Ram Kumar. All four victims were rushed to a nearby private hospital; the two workers were declared dead on arrival, while the others remain in critical condition. Khanna received first-aid treatment before being referred to Fortis Hospital.

Gurugram police officers stated that the exact sequence of events remains unclear and that CCTV footage is being reviewed. A senior officer from Bajghera police station confirmed that both bodies were taken to the mortuary and that the injured are undergoing treatment. The car was impounded, and a blood sample was collected from the driver to test for alcohol consumption.

Police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving causing death at Bajghera police station. Officials indicated that a formal case against Khanna will be filed once the families of the deceased submit written complaints.
