Ukraine’s Counteroffensive Breakthrough in Donetsk’s “Fortress Belt”

Ukrainian forces have achieved a frontline gain in the Donetsk region by surprising Russian troops and keeping the advance undisclosed until recently. Major Maksym Zhorin, deputy commander of Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps, said the operation—named “Operation Vivaldi”—prevented Russia from encircling the heavily fortified “Fortress Belt,” a line of cities and defensive positions that Russian President Vladimir Putin has identified as a key war objective. Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi, commander of the same corps, explained that Russian plans to converge pincers north of Lyman and south through Dobropillya were thwarted, allowing Ukrainian mechanized units to move forward toward Lyman.

Ukraine’s success is attributed to strict operational security and a “protective drone” system that employed electronic-warfare tools to neutralize roughly 20,000 Russian drones. The system also supported “flag-raising missions at safe distances” to conceal the true extent of Ukrainian positions. An intermediate-range strike campaign in Luhansk, according to the 3rd Army Corps, degraded Russian fuel supplies and reduced the adversary’s ability to employ drones and electronic warfare, giving Ukrainian forces an edge in supporting mechanized advances. Favorable weather further aided the push into locales such as Serednie.

Military analyst Giorgi Revishvili emphasized that “maintaining informational silence and limiting public discussion of specific operations can therefore help ensure that Russian forces operate with incomplete or distorted information about developments on the battlefield.” He added that Ukraine’s “meticulous planning” and suppression of Russian unmanned systems were critical to protecting the operational area. The Institute for the Study of War observed that both sides are experimenting with limited mechanized maneuvers, but Kyiv’s efforts have been “much more effective” to date.
