Historical Context

On 18 January 1991 Iraq fired 46 Scud missiles at Saudi Arabia, leading the United States to deploy Patriot batteries to shield Mecca and Riyadh. The Gulf War demonstrated that a U.S.–British-Arab coalition could field mobile air-defence. Houthi drone attacks on Mecca now echo that threat, prompting Saudi Arabia to seek similar Patriot assistance from France, Britain, Pakistan and Egypt.
