Historical Context

In April 1941 the United States and Danish ambassador Henrik Kauffmann signed a defense pact that let America build and operate bases in Greenland. The 1951 Greenland Defense Agreement, after Denmark joined NATO, formalized U.S. use of three main bases and the right to add new ones. The September 2026 Trump-Frederiksen-NATO deal repeats that framework, extending U.S. basing rights while excluding China and Russia.
