NSW Launches Institute for Paediatric Trauma After Bondi Incidents

The New South Wales government will establish the NSW Institute for Paediatric Trauma at Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick. The institute will unite clinicians, researchers and specialists to deliver advanced training, simulation exercises and injury-prevention research across the state’s health system. It is slated to become operational within six months and will initially focus on training at Randwick before expanding to regional NSW and the Australian Capital Territory, where paediatric trauma cases are frequently transferred to Sydney hospitals.

The creation of the institute follows two recent high-profile incidents in the state: a terror attack on Bondi Beach and the 2024 Westfield Bondi Junction stabbings. Both events highlighted the distinct clinical requirements of severely injured children, which differ from adult trauma patterns such as motor-vehicle collisions. Experts note that paediatric injuries often involve internal organ damage from risky activities, e-bike crashes, and burns that follow unique patterns. Regular mass-casualty simulations are seen as essential for building response capabilities, as demonstrated by the preparedness of staff during the 2017 Manchester Arena attack.

Dr Guy Henry, co-director of trauma services at Randwick, emphasized that treating children requires distinct approaches and that education, including simulation, can increase staff confidence in managing mass-casualty events. He also highlighted the institute’s role in supporting the psychological wellbeing of healthcare workers, families and patients.

The institute will draw expertise from the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, including Westmead Hospital and the Newborn and Paediatric Emergency Transport Service, and will complement the Agency for Clinical Innovation’s Institute of Trauma and Injury Management. Philanthropic funding will be provided through the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation, and training will eventually extend to paramedics, firefighters, police and the State Emergency Service.
