Coco Robotics issued a statement acknowledging the routing error and apologizing for the disruption. The firm said its team quickly corrected the problem, clearing the robots and restoring normal operation within minutes. It added that the specific routing behavior has been solved and new safeguards have been installed to prevent recurrence. Coco also highlighted that, over two years of operation in Chicago, the fleet has completed tens of thousands of trips, saved consumers an estimated $500,000, created skilled maintenance jobs, and reduced vehicle traffic.
Accessibility and Community Concerns
The incident raised safety questions for pedestrians with mobility challenges. Commenters described the blockage as a “nightmare” for wheelchair users, and advocates noted that a temporary robot jam can become a serious obstacle for blind pedestrians, stroller-pushers, and others. Coco cited a partnership with BlindSquare, a GPS app that provides spoken alerts about sidewalk hazards in 26 languages and allows users to report cleared obstacles, aiming to improve accessibility as robots navigate public pathways.
