Historical Context

During the Iran-Iraq War, the United States Navy launched Operation Earnest Will (24 July 1987 – 26 September 1988) to escort re-flagged Kuwaiti tankers and deter Iranian mines and boat attacks. Special-operations units, including SEALs and Nightstalkers, cleared mines and protected numerous ships. Admiral Brad Cooper now cites that historic “ironclad blockade” as precedent for today’s Hormuz security effort.
