Historical Context

In August 2014 the EU and Canada concluded negotiations on CETA, the continent’s biggest bilateral trade deal since NAFTA. The pact was signed on 30 October 2016 by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and EU leaders, and provisionally applied from 21 September 2017, eliminating about 98 % of tariffs. This precedent underpins today’s EU associate-member proposal that seeks deeper trade, AI, defence and mineral cooperation.
