The Attack
On the night of September 17, CCTV captured a vehicle ramming the metal gate of the Cornwall Islamic Community Centre in Carnon Downs, near Truro. Shortly thereafter, two individuals poured petrol-like oil over the grounds and walls of the centre. The damage was discovered early on September 18, prompting an urgent call for repairs and support.
Immediate Community Response
Volunteer imam Hasan Kilic told supporters that the centre would not allow the vandalism to “define our community,” pledging to answer with “positivity and unity.” The following day, a local resident arrived with sponges to help clean the oil, and two elderly women brought flowers and a donation. Kilic highlighted the assistance in a Facebook video posted on September 19, noting the unexpected help from a non-Muslim gentleman who “just heard what happened.” Community member Nina Coulson expressed outrage, describing the centre’s attendees as “quietly and consistently” charitable and “genuinely decent people.”
Official Condemnation
Cornwall Council officials issued a joint statement condemning the attack. Councillor Martyn Alvey (Feock and Kea), chairman Karl Ramshaw (Kea Parish Council), and chairman Richard Brickell (Feock Parish Council) described themselves as “shocked and appalled,” emphasizing the centre’s 20-year role in providing worship and broader local support.
