Early-Morning Refuelling Recommended as UK Fuel Prices Surge

By Drooid · · How we work

Core Advice and Timing Rationale – Fill Before 10 am on Fridays

Motors and diesel drivers in the United Kingdom have been urged to complete refuelling before 10 a.m. on Fridays. Interfuels expert Gordon Wallis explains that wholesale fuel costs can change several times a day, and many forecourt retailers adjust their pump prices by late morning to reflect overnight market movements. Consequently, drivers who wait until midday often pay a premium, while those who fill early can benefit from the lower rates that still reflect the previous day’s wholesale price.

Current Fuel Price Landscape

According to RAC Fuel Watch data released on September 14, the average price of unleaded petrol stands at 169.68 pence per litre and diesel at 191.68 pence per litre. These levels exceed the diesel peak of 191.54 pence per litre recorded on April 15, and approach the historic diesel record of 199.05 pence per litre set on June 25 2022. Petrol prices remain below their all-time high of 191.53 pence per litre reached on July 3 2022.

Expert Commentary on Pricing Dynamics

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, notes that fuel prices have risen to levels not seen since early August 2022, a period that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He attributes the current surge to oil trading above $100 (£74.20) per barrel, a price he says shows “no end in sight” for high pump prices. Wallis adds that the timing of driver demand—particularly the busy late-morning and early-afternoon periods—reduces pressure on retailers to keep prices low, reinforcing the advantage of early-day refuelling.

Practical Savings for Drivers

Wallis estimates that motorists who consistently refuel at the optimal time could save over £100 per year. In addition to timing, he advises drivers to avoid the typical Friday-and-Saturday price increase, which can add 1–3 pence per litre toward the weekend. Filling up at 10 a.m. on Friday may therefore represent the last opportunity each week to capture the lowest rates before the weekend surge.

By aligning refuelling habits with wholesale price cycles and weekly demand patterns, drivers can mitigate the impact of the steepest fuel price increases seen in recent years.
